Abstract

A considerable cause of physical and cognitive disability is stroke. To prevent damage or reduce the appearance of lesions after a cerebrovascular event at the level of the central nervous system, neuroprotective drugs such as citicoline are used. Neuroprotective agents are important in the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases and in the protection of traumatic injuries. Describe the benefits of citicoline as a neuroprotector in the post-cerebrovascular event. Documentary descriptive type research. The DeCS/MeSH descriptors provided us with the keywords “benefit”, “neuroprotective”, “cerebrovascular accident” and “Citicoline” for subsequent collection, review and analysis of bibliographic sources in databases such as PubMed, Elsevier and Scopus, in Spanish and English, through the Google Academic search engine and the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT, related to the topic raised. The studies reviewed show evidence that patients with acute stroke can benefit from treatment with citicoline by obtaining better functional and neurological recovery, in addition to being a safe and useful drug. In conclusion, citicoline is highly safe and induces neuronal regeneration. In this way, it represents a viable pharmacological option for patients who have suffered an ischemic stroke.
